What Is A Commercial Arborist?

Arborist

Surely an arborist is just a tree surgeon, going by a fancier name?

Well, not really. Tree surgeons scale trees, chopping off decayed limbs like a surgeon performing an amputation. Arborists are more like doctors than surgeons, diagnosing problems and prescribing treatments.

The Job Of An Arborist

An arborist is a scientist, a student of tree biology. The most educated have master's degrees in arboriculture, forestry and similar subjects. They’ve spent years studying the intricate workings of trees and how to keep them healthy.

One of an arborist’s primary roles is to assess tree health. This might focus on how to keep a tree in good shape, or on identifying a problem and nursing it back to health. For example, they often conduct tests to diagnose disease, decay, pests and nutrient deficiencies. After identifying the problem, they apply fertilisers, pesticides or other treatments. With their expertise, you can avoid felling some truly beautiful trees.

These specialists are also trained in planting and nurturing. This is ideal for transforming your site, whether it’s a golf course that’s looking a little bare or an office complex in need of brightening up. They select appropriate species for your space and can advise on any actions needed to help them thrive.

Commercial Work

Arborists spend just as much time on commercial projects as on private clients. It makes sense, given how much value trees can add to a site.

Consider a housing development. Trees have a real positive impact on the residents, who can enjoy shade, lower temperatures, and enriched wildlife and biodiversity. Green, tree-filled developments are hugely appealing, especially given their influence on mental health and well-being. In fact, healthy trees can add value by around 7%, so having an arborist on board is a wise business move.

Some regulations for construction and development actually require an arborist assessment. Not only do these register any diseases, they also point out risks and hazards where a tree might endanger buildings and/or people. At that point, tree surgeons come in.
