Becoming a tree surgeon apprentice

The National Apprenticeship Week 2021 is being held from 8 – 14 February and focuses on the theme of Build the Future: Train, Retain and Achieve.

At Beechwood trees and Landscapes Ltd we have been lucky in having some great apprentices that have developed into skilled arborists today.

Our Managing Director, Simon Rotheram spoke to Ryan Tyson who started with us as a level 2 apprentice back in June 2018, over the last 2 years has significantly improved his skills and knowledge in his role.

He now climbs trees on a regular basis undertaking all types of arboricultural operations.

It is fantastic to see the development of of the workforce from the ground up.

Here are a few of his thoughts on the apprenticeship scheme and his role with us:

• SR: What is your favourite part of the job?

• RT: Mainly getting the opportunity to climb, especially undertaking a nice tree reduction.

• SR: What do you least enjoy?

• RT: Not keen on trimming hedges!

• SR: What are your thoughts on the apprenticeship

• RT: Its a great way to learn and start your career in tree surgery, while getting hands on experience.

• SR: Where do you see yourself in the future?

• RT: Developing my skills at Beechwood and hopefully running my own team

• SR: That’s great, any other comments?

• RT: Working as a tree surgeon is more like a hobby than a job!
