Collaborative approach to tree management in urban areas.

Trees in urban areas play an important role not only in beautifying their environment, but their role is beyond basic amenity, as they are also a part of the benefits required to help achieve a healthier standard of living.

It is important that everyone should see the needs of trees or green areas in the urban environment as a shared responsibility, which requires the involvement, understanding and diversity of disciplines from various sections of society, planners, engineers, architects, property developers, *arborists, private sector, community leaders and the public.

Tree function and care.

The real function of trees planted in the city is not just as a decorative element or purely cosmetic in nature.

For example, the presence of shady trees in public parks attracts visitors for recreation and picnics, and encourages interaction and various positive activities that help strengthen community values, family and friendship, and contributes to improving the quality of life of residents.

Unfortunately, due to nature, not all trees grow perfectly; some grow with a good structural appearance while others may need some help and treatment.

There may be conditions or forms in tree structures that could cause hazard or risk, the trees should be managed in accordance with appropriate arboricultural practices.

Many factors can contribute to tree failure including limited planting space, root pruning without considering the tree’s ability to support the weight of the canopy and disturbing their standing, storms, injuries to tree trunks, compacted soil, excessive and careless pruning.

Tree planting and replenishing the urban tree stock

If tree planting is planned and implemented well, these trees will be able to continue to stand tall as a symbol of environmental sustainability and life, providing various functions and means to society.

At Beechwood Trees and Landscapes Ltd we plant in excess of 3000 trees, 250 of which are standard trees on the highway, parks and urban spaces, in Coventry alone.

We work closely with tree officers and highway officers to ensure the design and implementation of the tree planting is appropriate and well thought out, for their welfare and future contribution to the environment.

Some information on the benefits of tree planting and selection can be found in our blog:

Caring for trees using the best arboricultural practices can help make them healthier and safe, as well as reduce risks, thus enabling the trees to live longer in urban areas.

As an arborist our role is to provide services in all aspects of tree care, which included species selection, planting, pruning, risk management, damage prevention as well as tree growth management, especially in heavily used, urban environments.

The role of an arborist is gaining attention and this is a positive development because the community is now beginning to understand the importance of caring for the environment, including trees.
