How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

This is often the first question asked by potential customers (Our existing customers already have an indication of this cost).

We get it.

Unfortunately, its a little like asking ‘how long is a piece of string?’

It's tough to answer this question specifically, as no two trees or sites are the same, so it's often impossible to know the price until its figured out exactly whats required, and have had skilled professionals assess your site to figure out if it might need any special approaches or specialist machinery.

Therefore there are many variables involved in pricing a tree work operation, we will detail some of these below:

  • Tree size: The size part is probably an obvious one, the larger the tree, the more work involved, so therefore additional time and costs involved.

  • Tree condition: If the tree is dead or dangerous, it comes with additional risk, this may require additional time to undertake and require specialist operations such as rigging (lowering from ropes and pulleys) or arboricultural machinery, such and cherry pickers/work platforms or excavators to complete it safely.

  • Site restrictions: This will involve access (how close can we get to the tree) to use bigger machines and/or reduce dragging time, along with whats below the tree that could potentially be damaged - again involving rigging to prevent harm.

Once the above factors have been assessed and the safe method of work agreed then the costings can be put together and a written quotation prepared.

According to Checkatrade, the tradesmans website:

The average cost of a tree surgeon (or arborist) in the UK is around £300 per day, depending on the individual and the exact nature of the job. As tree surgeons often work in teams of 3, due to the nature of the work, the total tree surgeon cost per day is about £900 per day.

As you may now have gathered the range of prices can now vary dramatically from tree to tree , depending on requirements and additional machinery, we have felled individual trees from as little as £50 each, right up to £8,000 for a very large dangerous tree that required a crane and other equipment.

Its is also worth considering, that there is a basic overhead cost that a ‘compliant’ tree surgery company has to cover in order for them to operate safely in line with legislation. These costs include, staff training, insurance, professional memberships, waste disposal etc.

Instructing a cheap company may be great on the pocket initially, but where they may be avoiding costs to reduce the price needs to be factored in - it could cost significantly more money in the future, or worse!

Because of this we offer free site visits and consultations by our qualified and experienced surveyors, that will provide advice, followed by a written fixed price quotation for you.
